How To Handle A Hostile Work Environment - Work It Daily
How To Handle A Hostile Work Environment - Work It Daily How To Handle A Hostile Work Environment - Work It Daily How To Handle A Hostile Work Environment Sometimes terminology is used in our culture that gets adopted and used, but it isn't being used correctly. âHostile Work Environmentâ is one of those terms you hear, but it may or may not be true to the legal definition. Thatâs right, when it comes to this term; we have laws about hostile work environments and with the law comes a legal definition. Itâs good to know the difference, because depending on what you are really talking about, your potential actions could be very different. To quote About.com: âA hostile work environment is created by a boss or co-worker whose actions, communication, or behavior makes doing your job impossible. This means that the behavior altered the terms, conditions, and/or reasonable expectations of a comfortable work environment⦠and must be discriminatory in nature. (Discriminatory would be about age, religion, gender, or race.) The behavior must last over time and must be severe.â As you can see this is a very specific set of behaviors that protect our right to work. There can be legal ramifications because someone has made working and prospering at work impossible, if this issue is not handled properly by the employer. Since we are clear about the true, legal meaning of âHostile Work Environment,â letâs look at what's taking place when your work situation may or may not be aligned to this technical term, but itâs bad nonetheless. What can you do in either situation? How To Handle A Hostile Work Environment Know the proper way to escalate an issue. You donât want to go from your office to the local Bureau of Labor and Industry to talk to a lawyer. No matter which situation you are in, you are expected to work from the bottom up. Your steps should be: 1. Address The Issue Directly With The Offender Difficult for many people, but necessary, is to adequately communicate what the issue is and to give a very specific example. You donât want to use absolutes like âyou always talk vulgar to meâ when that isnât actually true, because that person may be vulgar frequently, but not âalways.â Consider: âWhen you spoke to me just now, that was vulgar and inappropriate. You do not have my permission to continue.â 2. If The Issue Continues Again, difficult for some people, but you need to repeat your previous message and then let them know you will be escalating it to both management and HR. By this point, you should be documenting both your conversations and comments made to you by the offender. You may need this type of detailed information when you take the issue up the food chain. 3. Take It To Management And Human Resources (HR) Not all companies have an HR, but if they do, you need to cover your bases and ensure they are in the loop. When you take your issue to your manager, you will be much more effective if you can keep calm and professional. An emotional scene wonât help make your case despite how you might feel about it. You need to be prepared to give specific examples. You also need to be prepared for management to speak to the offender, making the previous step important. You must hold your management accountable for correcting the situation. This doesnât mean you insisting on this person being fired, but it is reasonable to expect that they will take whatever action they think will curb the inappropriate behavior. You should expect, and ask for a follow up, to minimally hear back that they did take action. You donât need a full account of what was said and done, as that is confidential. 4. If It Continues... Again, you need to follow the previous steps and waste no time informing your management and HR. You are still looking for these people to take action. 5. And If It Still Continues... At this point, you may be out of options. If the issue does follow the definition of a hostile work environment, you may have grounds for a legal action. If it is simply someone who does annoying things, badgers your work or makes rude remarks, your only two options are: Take the issue to a higher management level. Leave. While it might seem unfair that you would have to be the one to leave, all too many people tend to be weenies when dealing with difficult personnel issues. You can either find a way to tolerate it, be miserable or leave. Hopefully, you will never have to face this type of situation but if you do, learn the right way, the professional way of addressing this kind of issue. It will be more effective in the long run for everyone involved. Enjoy this article? You've got time for another! How Paper Shredding Gave Me A Fresh Start
How Paper Shredding Gave Me A Fresh Start It all started with a seemingly innocuous idea.Tired of the lack of closet space in my small home, I asked a friend if I could borrow his paper shredder. I had known for a while that I wanted to dispose of some old employment papers associated with my long and varied career. I mean, why would I need to keep the performance review that was done just before I left for maternity leave the one wherbeie my boss recorded that I went to the doctor too much? Twenty-five years ago, even I knew that comment didnt belong there. So why had I been holding onto it for so long? The shredder was bigger than I had anticipated (not to mention much louder), and shredding at first was a task I couldnt wait to finish just so I could get the electric behemoth out of my house as quickly as possible. But after shredding the trail of papers that represented my stop-and-start career, I found myself taking a gimlet eye to something else my files of divorce papers.I kn ew that the evidence of my long-ago marriage, which ended abruptly and with deep pain, had been serving as a silent monument of look-what-he-did-to-me. Somehow, I had always thought that my daughter would surely want to read these papers. Of course this was based on the cherished fantasy that she would understand what I had been through for her. But after lugging around the files from move to move, I slowly came to the realization that the documents didnt really represent the best of my life, and I wondered if, in the end, if I really wanted to leave a mass of harshly-worded paperwork behind. Opening the massive divorce file gingerly, I began at the beginning The Separation Agreement. Here is where every detail of single parenting is laid out. Who would take our daughter on holidays, who would pay for her braces and college, who would drive her to school. I held it over the shredder for a few seconds. Then, it was gone.Shredding the agreement gave me a sudden surge of confidence, an d I found that the mora I shredded, the lighter I felt inside. It was as though I was at brde unhooking the past and letting it trail off behind me. Out went my budget book from the early divorce years that outlined what I spent on diapers and daycare. Out went the letters from HIS attorney fighting to pay less child support than his salary dictated. Out went my attorneys final bill. Before long, I was shredding the marital household bills and tax returns. Even the receipt for our bed the last document with both our names written together. It was almost as though I were obliterating an entire decade of my life. But instead of feeling sad, I felt liberated from the past and hopeful for the future. And I realized something else, too that a silly form of magical thinking had been engulfing me all these years and forcing me to keep all these old documents. I had been wondering if something happened in the past and there were no papers to document it, then did it really happen? The shre dder answered that question with its constant whirring. Yes, the events occurred even the dotty boss I worked for all those years ago existed (although hes long gone now). But I also realized that one does not always need to have tangible evidence to prove a life existed. I also just couldnt imagine my daughter sitting on the floor outside my closet going through each file, page by page. And is that really how I want her to remember me through a collection of cold, legal documents? Certainly, my life has been more multi-dimensional than a mass of paper, no matter how painstakingly chronological they are.The entire shredding process took no more than three days, and getting rid of my old papers left a wonderful space in my closet which I have already filled with a small trunk. But new papers and documents wont be going into that trunk. Instead, I will be filling it with a soft baby blanket of my daughters that is now freshly laundered and folded. Also, a stash of favorite books lef t behind from what turned out to be a very happy childhood. Im sure Ill be picking up a few other newer baby trinkets along the way, as well. Im going to be a grandmother, and thats a role I wont need any papers for.--Donna is a freelance writer with a particular interest in the issues, struggles, loves, and dreams of women.
